Recently, we created three different looks (one of which is below) with RMS cosmetics, the cosmetics line of award-winning makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift. Well, when we heard she was a veritable encyclopedia of the benefits – and hazards – of the everyday cosmetics we’ve become dependent upon, we jumped at the opportunity to meet with her! As part of our beauty, wellness, and wisdom series, we caught up with the NY-based Rose-Marie at one of her favorite local haunts, ABC Kitchen. We discussed her collection along with her (now not) secret beauty tips.
In her twenties, Rose-Marie became inexplicitly quite sick. She explains, “My hair was falling out and I was very ill. I got all my blood-work done they asked me ‘Do you work in the cosmetic industry?’ and I said, ‘Well, how come?’” As it turns out, Rose-Marie had very high levels of chemicals traditionally found in high concentrations of conventional cosmetics. She elaborates, “Stuff like Barium, a whole list: half of which I couldn’t pronounce.”
This experience sparked a curiosity – and to a certain extent, a crusade – which Rose-Marie has turned into professional success. She launched her own cosmetics line to offer a healthy alternative to the chemical-laden product that is already out there. She explains, “I started getting the purest ingredients and the difference between product with the same formula but with really high-end food-grade ingredients was phenomenal.” She continues, “The texture, smell, the viscosity – such an improvement in the way it spread and reacted to the skin. I was so surprised.”
Moreover, the pigments she uses – derived from minerals – are the best on the market. “In general, I’m in control of every ingredient that goes into my product and in my lab formula. I buy the most expensive ones you can buy in the business – that’s why they don’t build on the skin, go cakey and dry out. They are uncoated, so no silicon coating: totally raw and uncorrupted.”
So, what did we learn from Rose-Marie?
Beware of chemically engineered, expensive skin products. ”People are spending hundreds and thousands of dollars on fancy face products. If they were so great, everyone would be happy with their skin. I don’t use soap on my face – I simply clean it with coconut oil. Its basically raw coconut cream – its very high performance; it has seen no heat or chemicals. I just wash my face with coconut oil, rub it around, and leave a little bit of a residue. It has antifungal, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties that really assist the skin. And it is the best makeup remover on the face of the earth.”

Un-makeup. “I always recommend a light application of products – and you don’t need to do the entire face! What she recommends for a unmade-up look: My uncover-up just won the award from Allure for best coverup. It has jojoba oil, which is the closest to human sebum. And I swear by my number one seller, living luminizer. It doesn’t have glitter products or sparkle – which often look tacky: too frosted, too white-looking. I created mine so the skin just looks really moist. Dab a little on your eye, on your cheekbone – it looks dewey, like you’re really healthy.”
Don’t pick products that (literally) age you. ”I would not put a crease-proof cream eyeshadow on my eyelid for the life of me. There are tons of chemicals that they put in there to make it stay put that will age your eye. I’ve seen people and their eyelids become crepe-y from using them consistently; they’ve lost that moisture and elasticity from that stuff.”
Multipurpose! ”You can use my eyeshadows for lips or the cheeks; they can go anywhere you want. And my lip and cheek colors, the same thing. Its user-friendly! How often does a woman have time to do all that shading, contouring, and priming? I want this line to be accessible to real women, who want that little extra glow and luminosity.”
