ABC on the Mezz, our platform for innovative and inspirational conversation here on ABC Carpet & Home’s Mezzanine level, welcomed Apartment Therapy’s Design Evening with David Stark, renowned New York event producer and President of his own David Stark Design and Production.
David Stark began his design career path working solely with flowers. The first item, not a flower, that he decorated a table with was a candle. While, it might seem like a quite ordinary option, where that moment has taken him has been extraordinary.
Placing that candle inspired Stark to think beyond conventionality. Now, his firm is celebrated for its progressive, creative, and innovative events from a private wedding to a sparkling, celebrity bash to a large-scale corporate event or a massive non-profit, fundraising gala.
Still, very down to Earth, he emphasizes that his decorating is rooted in a conceptual process of listening to a client’s needs and still involves very real emotions. “I can make [an evening] live and speak about who you are,” Stark said. “It is a great challenge and a great reward to touch people like that.”
Stark’s style is known for its resourcefulness in design, like his “tornado of shoes” for the Robinhood Foundation, that were then donated after the event. “When there’s meaning in the object it’s a whole different thing,” said Stark. “I never want someone to walk into our event and say, ‘Oh my god, they spent so much money.’ I want them to walk in and say, ‘That is so cool.’”
