Meet our Interior Design Consultant, Steven Wagner.
Born in Rome, Steven attended college in England and landed in the States in his twenties. Previously, a founding editor at the greatly missed design and lifestyle magazine, Metropolitan Home, and a long-time friend of ABC, Steven’s repertoire made for an obvious and gracious addition to expand our breadth as a design entity.
Running between six floors and clients’ homes, Reveal managed to steal a moment with Steven for some ABC Q&A.
How do you read a person’s vision?
After 20-plus years of helping clients achieve a desired look, I have a pretty good sense of where they want to go at our initial meeting. I never dictate a style, but rather try to bring it out by listening, seeing what they may already have, and looking through “wish books” they may have put together.
Why would someone use a design consultant?
Some people say ‘I have absolutely no sense of style and I don’t have a clue where to start.’ Others have a very clear sense of style, but are paralyzed with indecision. That’s where I come in, to help them get over the paralysis and ensure they are comfortable with their selections.
What was your most memorable client experience?
A delightful couple from Brazil. We became friends in the process of putting together a very large home in under two weeks.
Why do you love doing this?
I love the variety offered throughout ABC. I get a kick out of walking into the store every day and seeing how things have changed or been added to overnight.
What does it take to do what you do?
A sense of style, a love of furnishings, accessories, fabrics, and floor coverings…and patience.
Who are your favorite designers in-store?
There are six fabulous floors at ABC, as well as three floors of floor coverings across the street. I find favorites everywhere, every day.
How is a design experience at ABC different from other design centers?
We are passionate about introducing products from companies with good sustainability track records and are always trying to further the notion that industry leaders must continue to do more and more to raise the consumers awareness about the dangers of environmental pollution. It is for everyone’s benefit that consumers support those manufacturers that are taking steps in producing beautiful, quality merchandise that is not harmful to our world.
