We adore the tremendous versatility of these shimmering finds. It is no wonder, then, that the designer – New York-based Satomi Kawakita – is a woman who appreciates the precious and practical.
Educated in her native Japan from everything from woodworking to metal to textiles, she formally began her career abroad as glassblower’s apprentice. This experience helped formed her idea of creating. She explains, “The guy I used to work for was tremendously talented. But I don’t think I could be like him, mentally and physically. He was a real artist; everything he made had meaning. I’m not an artist – I am a designer and a craftswoman. I want to make something I will wear and use.”
After working as a diamond setter upon her arrival in New York City, she decided to start creating her own line of jewelry, on the belief she could fill a gap in the current marketplace. “I felt like everything made of gold was too commercial looking,” she says. “It had no personality. I began designing my own jewelry because I couldn’t find what I wanted to wear.”
Although each ring feels like a one-of-a-kind piece of art (rendered from materials like 18k gold, platinum and diamonds) most are suitable for all occasions. She elaborates, “My work is functional; you can wear it casually and to dress up. Daily, really. And price-wise it’s not outrageous.” Her designs are for the modern woman; who desires jewelry that is appropriate for everyday wear but still feels incredibly special. And certainly someone who likes jewelry with a sense of personality, a bit of quirk, a story to tell.
She smiles, “The rings are not perfect. I like them that way.” So do we.
